Locals react to probable NRC furloughs

Posted: Updated:
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

It's very likely the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will furlough thousands of its employees because of the government shutdown.

Those furloughs will not have a significant impact on Three Mile Island or Peach Bottom because resident inspectors there and all over the county will stay put.  But some locals still aren't happy about it.

On Thursday 3,600 NRC employees are set be furloughed if Congress doesn't end the government shutdown.

Three hundred essential workers will remain; 150 resident inspectors as well as top-level management and emergency personnel.

However, an NRC spokesperson said other inspectors that might be assigned to special checks will have to put their work on hold.

"Frankly we are concerned," Eric Epstein with the watchdog group Three Mile Alert said.  "People that perform their core functions will be there...that's not going to change. What we are talking about is the people that monitor those people and the fact that they are not going to be as aggressive as they used to be. It's not a good thing, but I don't think it's cause for alarm."

It's an issue Jessi Brown has also been keeping a close eye on. She has lived in Middletown and worked at TMI for 27 years.

"I believe they all are essential," Brown said.
