Assistant to Birmingham mayor indicted on money laundering charges

A grand jury has indicted an assistant to Birmingham Mayor William Bell on money laundering charges, ABC 33/40 has learned.

Kenneth Lee Crittenden, who sources confirm is Mayor Bell's assistant at the Birmingham Crossplex, is accused of using his personal business, E-Z Auto Sales, to conceal the proceeds of drug trafficking activities.

Crittenden was arrested outside City Hall Tuesday.

The indictment (Read in its entirety here) claims Crittenden used his business to purchase a $90,000 Corvette for Billy Williams Jr., one of ten men charged in a Birmingham area heroin and cocaine trafficking ring. Williams was arrested in May.  

Crittenden's arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, October 17 at the Hugo L. Black Federal Courthouse.

Mayor Bell's office would not comment on the indictment.
