CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Chambersburg police are investigating an incident where some type of explosive was launched into the air over the weekend.

Police said people called 911 to report a loud explosion in the area of Franklin and Miller streets around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, and responding officers found the remains of a large PVC-type pipe that had launched a mortar-type round.

Parts of the item that exploded were located on the roof of 337 W. King Street, police said.

Authorities said that potentially, the untrained person who ignited the device could have been severely hurt or killed, and homes in the area could have been set on fire from the debris falling from the sky.

Anyone with information on who may have been involved in the incident is asked to call Chambersburg police at 717-264-4131 or Franklin County Crimes Solvers at 717-263-3000.
