MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Cumberland County man convicted of third-degree murder 12 years ago has been charged with five armed robberies in the Mechanicsburg area during the past week.

James Alan Borwegen, 30, was arrested at his home in North Middleton Township early this morning after he robbed a Subway restaurant on Gettysburg Pike, Upper Allen police said.

Borwegen was wearing a green mask and pointed a large handgun at employees when he stole money from the cash register and a tip jar at around 8:40 p.m., police said.

An officer responding to the robbery spotted a "vehicle of interest" leaving the area, and Borwegen was taken into custody at around 5:40 a.m., police said.

Police said they searched Borwegen's home and vehicle and seized a .45 caliber pistol that matches the description of the handgun used in the Subway robbery.

According to charging documents, the gun was loaded with 10 rounds, and police also found the clothing worn during the robbery.

Borwegen was charged with robbery, simple assault, theft, and firearms violations and sent to Cumberland County Prison on $960,000 cash bail pending a preliminary hearing set for Nov. 4.

He was charged with the same counts later in the day for four other robberies in Mechanicsburg and Lower Allen Township.

Mechanicsburg police were investigating robberies at the Pizza Hut at 610 East Simpson Street on Thursday night, the Lucky Mart convenience store at 1100 East Simpson Street on Friday night, and the Sun Up Exxon gas station at 101 North Walnut Street Monday night.

Lower Allen Township police had been searching for a suspect in the robbery of the B&H Mart in the 3600 block of Simpson Ferry Road on Sunday night.

In each incident, police said the robber was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, a red mask, and demanded cash from the register while holding a gun.

No one was harmed in any of the robberies.

Borwegen in March 2001 was given a sentence of 7 to 14 years in prison for fatally shooting his 13-year-old neighbor, David Colebaugh, at Borwegen's home in Mechanicsburg in January 2000, when he was 16 years old.

He was out of prison on parole when the robberies were committed.
