Bedford, VA – A secretary for the Bedford Science and Technology Center got quite the birthday surprise Wednesday morning at work.

Valerie Martin says she is one of ABC 13 Jamey Singleton's biggest fans, following his forecasts on air and on Facebook daily.

Martin was also diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2009 and has been cancer-free for four years.

On her birthday, Martin's co-workers and some 100 students gathered in the school lobby with balloons and cards.

What Martin didn't know, however, was that the school had invited Singleton to be in on the surprise for her special day.

Screams, laughter, and applause filled the hallways.

"Oh my gosh, I didn't think it was real," Martin said.

"I never thought there would be such a reaction," Singleton said. "Needless to say, I was very humbled to be asked to be her birthday surprise, but having the opportunity to be in on the celebration of her [Martin] being cancer-free for so long was a very touching experience."

Singleton said he was just as surprised at the turnout and reaction.

"Yeah, Jamey was blushing more than I was," Martin said.

Martin has been the secretary at the school for 14 years. There is a TV in the school office so Martin can watch ABC 13 when the weather is on.
