Hanover incident not abduction attempt, police say

HANOVER, Pa. (WHTM) -

Hanover police say an incident reported by a 14-year-old girl Wednesday is no longer considered a child abduction attempt.

After further investigation, and following a second interview with the girl Thursday evening, Police Chief Dwayne Smith said investigators determined the incident did not involve any criminal activity.

The girl initially told officers she was walking in an alley off the 600 block of E. Middle Street when she was approached from behind by a man who grabbed her sweater. She said she ran off and reported the incident to her parents and police.

In the second interview, Smith said the girl admitted that the man did not grab her or attempt to follow her, but only "brushed" elbows with her as they passed in the alley, Smith said.

Smith said the girl was wearing headphones and listening to music as she was walking, and the brief physical contact scared her.

She admitted that her thoughts and statements to police on the night of the incident were based upon her fear of what could have happened, Smith said.
