Pastor under scrutiny for officiating gay son's wedding

LEBANON, Pa. (WHTM) -

Pastor Frank Schaefer has led the congregation of the Zion United Methodist Church of Iona for more than a decade. He loves his church, but he also loves his son Tim who admitted back in 2000 that he was gay.

Pastor Schaefer says he found out through an anonymous phone call. The person told him that Tim was contemplating suicide because he was confused about his sexuality.

Seven year later, Tim asked his father to preside over his marriage that took place in Massachusetts, where gay marriage is legal.

Pastor Frank never discussed the marriage ceremony with his congregation. The issue recently came to light, and Pastor Frank will go before a trial of his peers in November.

The jury will be made up of 13 members of the United Methodist Church, and it will take place in Chester County.

The jury could decide to suspend, reprimand or remove Pastor Frank from his duties as the leader of the Zion United Methodist Church of Iona.
