Liberty HS Students Taking Stand Against Bullying

Bedford Co., VA - Students in Bedford County are taking a stand against bullying Tuesday.

Rachel's Challenge came to Liberty High School. Two assemblies were held.

One for juniors and seniors, the other for freshmen and sophomores. The program is named for Rachel Scott, the first student killed in the 1999 Columbine shooting.

Its goal is to empower students to combat bullying and feelings of isolation by reaching out to their peers with kindness and compassion. Students wore orange Tuesday to show they support bullying prevention.

"As a student I hope to raise awareness for bullying, because it is a serious issue, and it's going on a lot in our country. So many people lose their lives everyday because of bullying, so I just hope that it raises more awareness and that it shows kids that it's not cool," said LHS senior Katlyn Thomas.

Rachel's Challenge was founded by Scott's father and stepmother. It is based on the 17-year-old's writings and the kindness she tried to show others during her life.
