Pride of Susquehanna celebrates 25 years

Posted: Updated:

The queen of the Susquehanna River is marking a milestone: the Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Built on City Island, the Pride's maiden voyage was in 1988. She has logged thousands of miles and carried 750,000 passengers over the years.

The paddle wheel vessel is one of only six in the United States.

"It is propelled and steered simply by the paddles," Captain Richard Spitler said. "We have no rudders, no propellers and no thrusters."

The crew is like family. Sharon Kipp is the bartender on board.  She has been serving smiles and sunshine for 23 years.

"Even on a rainy day, we have an angel above us and we try to make it as pleasurable as possible," Kipp said.

The vessel hosts many events like fall foliage cruises, murder mystery dinners, showers and birthday parties. Taking a ride on the Pride is what Sylvia Eckenrode wanted for her 73rd birthday bash.

"They said, 'what do you wanna do for your birthday?' I said, 'I wanna do something I've never done before. I wanna go on the Pride of the Susquehanna,' " Eckenrode said.

The Pride is a lot of fun, but it is also a tranquil and relaxing way to enjoy the river.

"Pride of the Susquehanna: one of the best kept secrets in Harrisburg," Spitler said.

The last cruise of the season is Sunday, November 10.  For more information, go to www.harrisburgriverboat.com.
