Ridge changes stance on gay marriage

Posted: Updated:

Former governor Tom Ridge signed the state's law banning same-sex marriage. But now, Ridge says his stance on the issue has evolved.

He talked about his new stance with the website, Buzzfeed, just before he gave a speech to the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay organization based in Washington.

"Our roots are conservative, but we should be far less. We oughtta quit being judgmental," Ridge said of his message to the GOP.

Some Midstate residents agree.

"The Republican party has got to lighten up if they want to survive on a lot of issues, including gay rights," Thomas Trullinger of Dauphin said.

Ridge was unable to provide abc27 with a comment because he was traveling.
