Breast Cancer Survivors Get The Ride of a Lifetime at Martinsville

Posted:

Martinsville, VA - NASCAR drivers are not the only ones who got to take a few laps around the track at the Martinsville Speedway Saturday.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, some survivors and their guests got to go on a ride of a lifetime. Some famous names were behind the wheel, too.

"I've never ridden with a racecar driver before, so that's pretty exciting," said Bassett resident Jean Joyce.

A group of breast cancer survivors, like Joyce, hopped in next to Ryan Newman, Jamie McMurray, and Paul Menard to feel the excitement of racing around the track.

"To think that 14 years ago I had cancer and didn't know if I would survive it or not and to be able to be here today and doing everything I did before I had cancer // it's wonderful," Joyce said.

The event was all part of Chevrolet's 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer' event which they've brought to four tracks this season and have raised over $2 million for the American Cancer Society.

"From a drivers standpoint to have that personal touch, to have that relationship with somebody who has gone through so much turmoil in their life to let them experience what we do, a part of what we do, it's great for us," said Sprint Cup Driver Ryan Newman.

The drivers said they wanted to make the ride as realistic as possible with some quick brakes and fast turns.

"We'll catch this pickup truck for sure," said driver Jamie McMurray. "It's exciting to see how excited they are to come out and let us give them rides around."

The Martinsville Speedway is also celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They have painted the curbs of the track pink in support.
