MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Three Mile Island Generating Station has been shut down for refueling and maintenance.

Exelon spokesman Ralph DeSantis said the refueling outage began shortly after midnight.

DeSantis said more than 1,700 highly trained technical workers are in the area to support the refueling outage, which is conducted every two years.

He said that during the outage, workers will replace one-third of the reactor's fuel, install new digital equipment, and overhaul the turbines that produce electricity.
