Dallastown man accused of breaking boy's leg

YORKANA, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Dallastown man was arrested on assault and endangerment charges after he allegedly threw a 3-year-old boy onto a bed and caused the child to break his leg, according to court documents.

Benjamin Brian Ladd, 27, told investigators he became frustrated and angry when the boy refused to go to his room.

He said he grabbed the child by his shoulders, picked him up and threw him down onto his bed, which caused the boy's leg to become twisted underneath him, the criminal complaint states.

The incident occurred Friday at the home of Ladd's girlfriend, the boy's mother, in the first block of E. Main Street in Yorkana, state police said in the complaint.

The mother told investigators that she finished a shower and heard the boy crying and complaining that his leg hurt. She said she went to the boy's bedroom and saw Ladd treating her son's leg with an ice pack, the complaint states.

The boy was taken to the emergency room at York Hospital and was found to have a broken femur, or thigh bone.

Police were called because the circumstances surrounding the injury were suspicious for child abuse, the court document states.

A doctor told police that the fracture was caused by "high impact" to the bone, and when a nurse asked him what happened, the boy told her, "Ben threw me off the bed," the document states.

Ladd was interviewed and told troopers that he normally is not abusive to the child, but that he was so enraged by the boy's unruly and disobedient behavior that he "saw red," the complaint states.

He apologized for his actions and told troopers he deserved to be punished for what he did, the court document states.

Ladd was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was released after posting $40,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing set for Nov. 5.
