GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Part of Gettysburg National Military Park was on fire Wednesday - just as park rangers had planned.

A scheduled burn was conducted to scorch 13 acres on the southern side of the battlefield.

Park officials want to clear out brush and prevent it from growing into public areas, with the goal of keeping the battlefield looking as it did during the Civil War.

Officials said burning is cheaper than using herbicides and better for the environment.

This was the first time Gettysburg used fire to clear unwanted brush.
