K-9 named in memory of fallen soldier

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

A new K-9 officer at the Cumberland County Sheriff Department is paying homage right from the start. 

His name is Magnum and he's a two-and-a-half-year-old black German Shepherd from Slovakia who's honoring the life of Pfc. Brandon Styer, a fallen soldier from Lancaster County. 

Styer was killed in Afghanistan back in October 2009. Less than two months before Styer died, his beloved German Shepard named Magnum died.

Partnered with Deputy Ron Hoover, Magnum is the new explosives and tracking K-9 officer who now serves the sheriff's office and the South Central Task Force.

"I can promise you K-9 Magnum and Deputy Hoover have two angels looking over them," Styer's mother Jill Myers said. "Brandon would be touched and honored that Deputy Hoover named his German Shepherd K-9 Magnum."
