HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Will drivers be thankful for a restored road over I-81 by the end of the month?

The answer; kind of.

On Monday, PennDOT told abc27 that the Route 22 east bridge will reopen in mid-to-late November, just in time for the busy Thanksgiving holiday.

The bridge was damaged by a massive tanker truck fire last spring. Part of the structure needed to be replaced.

Drivers will have to wait a bit longer for the Route 22/322 west ramp, which the truck was on.

That rehabilitation project is taking longer than expected.

PennDOT initially estimated that repairs would be completed by the end of the summer. Then, the timeline was pushed back to mid-October. Now it is slated to reopen by the end of the year.

PennDOT says additional problems were uncovered during the project.

"We had given a date that was earlier for that ramp. Once you get in there and start peeling off the layers, you realize how much work needs to be done," PennDOT spokesman Mike Crochunis said.
