Pregnant woman cut during attack in Hallam

Posted: Updated:

Police are investigating an incident where a pregnant woman was attacked by an intruder armed with a knife at the back door of a Hallam home.

Hellam Township Police Chief Mark Sowers said the woman was slashed twice with either a knife or some other type of sharp instrument Tuesday afternoon in the first block of East Forry Avenue.

"We're not sure what he was doing," Sowers said. "Obviously, it was someone she did not know and startled her, and upon them seeing each other he slashed her across the face and on the arm and took off."

The woman, who was not identified, was transported to a hospital. Her injuries are not life threatening and the baby has not harmed.

The woman is seven months pregnant and moved to the area about two weeks ago. She was in a friend's home alone and was letting her dogs out a back door when she encountered the attacker, who did not enter the home, Sowers said.

"I just don't know why they would hurt her," Debra Vaughn, the owner of the home, said through tears. "She's so sweet. I just don't know why anybody would be there."

Officers searched the area, but did not find a suspect.

The attacker has been described as a very pale white man, about 5'11" tall and weighing about 120 pounds, and wearing a dark sweatshirt.

Anyone with information may call Hellam Township police at 717-252-3714.
