Man, 44, attacked during Craigslist purchase

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police in Lancaster County are investigating an assault they believe is linked to a Craigslist transaction.

According to officials, the 44-year-old victim had responded to a Craigslist advertisement for a television and agreed to meet with the seller at MoviE-town Cinema on Tuesday at around 2:45 p.m.

Upon arrival at the theater along the 700 block of North Hanover Street, the victim met with a female suspect who asked him if he wanted to buy the television.

The woman, who used the name "Amanda," is believed to be in her mid-20s, about 5-foot-5, 110 to 120 pounds, with long brunette hair and possibly a stud nose piercing in the side of her nostril.

Police said she led the victim around the west side of the cinema toward a silver compact sedan to complete the transaction.

As the two passed a blind corner, the victim saw a man approach him in his peripheral vision.

The victim was struck once with a baseball bat on the head, knocking him to the ground. He was hit at least twice more before he was able to get to his feet and escape to the rear of the building.

According to police, the man was between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-7, 150 pounds, and wore a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Authorities said the victim is being treated at an area hospital for traumatic injuries to the head and arm.

Police are still investigating this incident. Anyone with information may contact the Elizabethtown Police Department at 717-367-1835.

Officials are asking the public to use caution when using the online marketplace; because of its anonymous nature, the opportunity exists for exercising criminal activity. If the deal seems too good to be true, it should be a warning.

Police suggest taking precaution and using a buddy system if you don't know the seller/purchaser. Also insist on making transactions in public areas that are well-lighted and, ideally, near video surveillance.

Parents should especially be aware of adolescent/teenage children who are entering the online marketplace and be concerned for their safety while meeting strangers for transactions.
