Christiansburg Man Charged After Bomb Threat

Update 5 p.m.:

Christiansburg, VA - A Christiansburg man is in jail charged with making bomb threats after authorities found a "suspicious device" inside his home.

Christiansburg Police say Caleb Elijah Haxton, 20, made the threat to destroy the home he was renting and was being evicted from.

Neighbors say, for the most part, this is a pretty quiet neighborhood even though they say the home in question that Haxton was renting seemed to always have young people hanging around it.

But those same neighbors realized something was wrong about 10 p.m. Wednesday when officers started to close down Alleghany Street near the intersection with Franklin Road.

Authorities were preparing to serve a search warrant that did end up producing what is being called a "suspicious device".

One neighbor I spoke with said that they eventually went to bed without knowing what was going on.

That before being awaken by a loud "bang" that went off near their home around 4 a.m.

"He thought somebody was breaking into the house. And so he jumped up and we looked outside and saw the State Police big van sitting out there. We were up since four just looking. We didn't know. They still had the roads blocked off all night long," said Tiffany Carroll, who lives across the street.

Police searched the home Wednesday night after learning of the threat and say they found a suspicious device.

It has been sent to a lab for testing.

Haxton is charged with making threats to bomb but could face more charges depending on the lab results.
