Danville Public Schools Joins Effort To Do Away with SOL's

Danville, VA-- There's lots of criticism over No Child Left Behind and how it affects our classrooms.

Now 30 school divisions across Virginia are expressing their concern, and Danville Public Schools is one of them.

The Danville School Board voted to support a resolution that says testing like SOL's, is an inadequate way of testing a student's learning ability.

It also says more teachers are leaving their field because they're forced to teach according to the tests, instead of teaching in a way their students learn best.

"We find out a lot about what children know in authentic ways, hands-on activities, exploration so we can assess that way. You don't necessarily don't know that students know things just by paper, pencil, or on this case even on the computer," said  Dr. Edward Newsome, Danville Public Schools Superintendent.

Other schools boards in our viewing area supporting this resolution include Appomattox County, Henry County, and Halifax.
