Veterans thanked in Silver Spring Twp commemoration

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Dozens gathered in front of the Silver Spring Township Veterans Memorial at Willow Mill Park to honor the brave men and women who have served our country.

Although Veterans Day wasn't designated until 1919, special remembrance was given to the War of 1812. Seven local men who fought 200 years ago were honored along with other past and present service members.

The physical memorial was established two years ago and consists of an American flag with five walls in front of it representing the five branches of the armed forces.

"Each wall has a notch out of the wall at the top or the side, and that's to signify that we have gone down but we still persevere in the overall campaign," said MST (Ret) Kurt Minnich, chairmen of the Silver Spring Township Memorial Committee.

Due to commodity prices spiking during construction the memorial went far above budget.
The committee is still working to raise money to pay back the project.

Any donations can be made through Silver Spring Township.
