Chief Flinchum Retires from Virginia Tech Police Department

Posted:

Blacksburg, Va. -- Chief Flinchum told us what's behind his decision to leave the force.

He started as a Virginia Tech student patrolman, and for nearly three decades served in multiple capacities in the police department.

In 2006 he was named chief, months before all eyes were fixed on Virginia Tech's campus for one of the most violent days in our nation's history when 33 people, including the gunman, were shot and killed.

Flinchum said that was his hardest and most trying time as Police Chief.

Another test came five years later when one of his own officers, Deriek Crouse, was gunned down by a lone shooter.

Flinchum told us he has been honored to serve that school.

"It's gone by very quickly and I've enjoyed it. I've had a great career, and some wonderful opportunities. The sense of community here at the university is one thing that's kept me here, words can't really describe it, but I think it's been demonstrated time after time through the events that we've had here,"  said Chief Wendell Flinchum.

Flinchum said he just had a feeling about leaving -- felt he'd served, and his time was up.

He adds that he'll spend more time with his family now.
