Calhoun County buries time capsule for 50 years

Leaving an inheritance for their children's children.

Retired judge Malcolm Street quoted Proverbs 13:22 during his keynote speech at Calhoun County's time capsule dedication.

The county buried a large stainless steel box containing items to represent the present which they leave for future generations. The time capsule is buried next to the front steps of the Calhoun County Courthouse, with instructions to dig it up on Wednesday, November 15, 2063.

Circuit Clerk Eli Henderson came up with the idea. He said the builders of the Courthouse buried one in 1900, underneath a stone marker which celebrated the completion of the building at the beginning of the century.

He said some people retrieved it in 1964, but the metal box rusted and the contents inside deteriorated.

That should not be the case with the 2013 capsule.

    Authorities are looking for a swimmer who's missing in dangerous surf on the Alabama coast. Gulf Shores police received a distress call about a male juvenile who was in distress in the water about 4 p.m. Sunday. The search had to be suspended after about three hours because of rough surf and fading light. The Gulf Shores Police Department says the search resumed Monday.     DeKalb County sheriff's officials say a body that was pulled from Weiss Lake in Leesburg has been identified as a 20-year-old woman who was recently reported missing. Sheriff Jimmy Harris says the body of Sarah Jane Ortiz of Valley Head was found in the lake by a fisherman on Friday.     At approximately1:40 am this morning Tuscaloosa Police responded to a reported shooting in the 4700 block of East McFarland Blvd (Motel 6). When officers arrived, they found the victim, 21 year old Jamarcus Marquez Roberts in his vehicle. Roberts had crashed into the shrubs at the entrance to the motel parking lot.
