A police officer was forced to jump onto the top of his cruiser to avoid being struck by a car that crashed into his vehicle's door during a traffic stop in suburban Harrisburg.
Susquehanna Township police said the patrolman was standing by the driver's door of an unmarked Ford Interceptor SUV, which had emergency lighting activated, when he saw an oncoming vehicle coming at him in the 3700 block of Walnut Street Wednesday night.
The crash caused moderate damage to the cruiser, but the patrolman and an officer in the passenger seat were not injured, police said.
The driver of the striking vehicle, identified as 75-year-old Robert Hafer of Harrisburg, was not injured.
He told officers that he did not see the cruiser before striking it, police said.
Police said he will be facing vehicle code violations.
