Patriot-News retracts criticism of Gettysburg Address

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Patriot-News says the old Patriot and Union newspaper was wrong to call President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address "silly."

Historians say the paper was partisan back in 1863 and did not support the war or the President.

The paper wrote an editorial five days after the historic speech that lasted just over two minutes.

Matt Zencey, deputy opinion editor of the Patriot-News and PennLive, said the retraction is an opportunity to poke fun at one of the more infamous chapters of the newspaper's history of service in the region.

Zencey says those who ran the paper back then were wrong in their judgement of one the iconic moments in the country's history.

The retraction and editorial will run in the Sunday edition of the Patriot-News.
