Winston-Salem State vs. Virginia State game canceled after fight

WINSTON-SALEM - NC -

Saturday's CIAA Championship football game between Winston-Salem State and Virginia State has been canceled and a player is now facing charges.

A group of Virginia State players allegedly assaulted Winston-Salem State quarterback, Rudy Johnson, during a luncheon at the North Carolina campus, Friday.

The scuffle left the starting quarterback with a swollen eye and cuts above his eye.

"Rudy's fine," Winston-Salem State Football Coach, Connell Maynor, said. "He's keeping ice on it so the swelling will stay down."

Meanwhile, fans say they're disappointed.

"So many fans coming from both sides and now you come here and there is no game," Virginia State student, Cory Lane, said. "This is crazy."

22-year-old Lamont Britt, a junior running back for Virginia State has been charged in the attack.

He's being held in jail on a $75,000 bond. Britt is scheduled to appear in court December 9th.
