Lynchburg, VA - The Lynchburg Humane Society has broken ground on their new site. The $5.6 million dollar project is expected to be complete next fall.
The new site on Old Graves Mill Road will have everything the folks at the Humane Society have wanted.
The Director said she believes it will be a great addition to the community. A crowd gathered Sunday afternoon to celebrate the ground-breaking and despite the drizzle, there were many supporters, employees, and animals in attendance.
The new facility will have a complete on-site medical center--along with space for educational programs for children and pet-owners. It will also allow the number of animals that can be housed at the society to increase by 147%.
Humane Society staff said the facility will feature an open and inviting atmosphere that will encourage more adoptions and involvement from the community.
"We're very excited. I cannot tell you. It's been a couple years in the making so it's nice to be here at this moment to be able to experience it with everybody," said Makena Yarbrough who is the Executive Director at the Humane Society.
Yarbrough also said they still have about 200-thousand more dollars to raise for the $5.6 million dollar project. The new building should be up and running by September 2014.
