Acorn Shortage Possibly Related to Increased Deer Collisions This Year

Posted:

Richmond, VA - State officials say they are a little bit concerned about how light the acorn crop is this year.

According to the Department of Forestry and Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, reports across the state show a very light crop.

They say it's hard to nail down one specific cause for the shortage, but weather, insects and disease are all a possibility.

Officials say the late spring freezes and high humidity during pollination are likely primary causes.

Experts say the acorn shortage could be making the problem with deer collisions worse than usual this year.

"Potentially, the shortage is bringing more deer into roadways," Pete Acker, District Biologist with Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said.
