Some Liberty University Students Question Lack of Alerts by Campus Officials After Shooting

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University has had a safety alert system since 2009 to notify students of potential threats on campus.

Students, though, say they received no safety alert from the university about Tuesday morning's attack.

LU officials say that's because the incident posed no threat to students.

Regardless, many say there was confusion on campus Tuesday morning.

"I almost feel like it was a matter of time," said Anne Tharpe. "We've got so many people living in one main area. And plus we're Christian so we're going to be a target, I feel like."

Lynchburg police say Joshua Hathaway, 19, of Lubbock Texas was killed after walking into an all-female dorm and attacking a campus officer.

Hours later, classes went on as usual, but students at the country's largest evangelical school in the country say they were left in the dark.

ABC 13 spoke to one Liberty University student who was actually sleeping on the first floor of the dorm hall when the shooting occurred. Anne Tharpe said it wasn't until two hours later that she got an email from school officials telling her to stay inside."

"We just got one from our RD just telling us that we couldn't be in the lobby, and just to be careful, basically," Tharpe said.

"A lot of parents are calling in. My dad just called me wanting to know what happened," said Tom Tran.

According to an article on KCBD's website, Hathaway graduated from Southcrest Christian School with a 4.57 grade point average. The report says he played basketball, was a distinguished band member, and was named Salutatorian of his high school.

Lynchburg police are now searching for a motive for the attack.

Even though the University stands by its assessment, that there was no threat, students wonder why the university didn't alert them sooner.

"I didn't get anything from the school, unfortunately," Tran said.

Liberty University is less than two hours away from Virginia Tech, the site of the largest school shooting on record.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Junior expressed his condolences to all the families involved. He says the university responded exactly as it should have.
