School districts consider new sports conference

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

Several school districts in the region are considering leaving the Mid-Penn Conference and forming a new league.

The Lower Dauphin School District is among those considering making the move. Athletic Director Dave Bitting says they are looking at joining a conference made of up teams close by.

Bitting says the district has teams that travel to State College and return home late in the evening, and that creates a strain on students who have homework, as well as higher travel expenses for the district.

Bitting says he hopes to know by the end of the first quarter of 2014 if the new league will be formed. He says a new conference would be up and running in two or three years.
