GREENCASTLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

A 77-year-old woman is dead following a series of crashes along Interstate 81 near Greencastle in Franklin County.

According to state police, four separate crashes occurred at around 10 a.m. on I-81 northbound at mile marker 6 in Antrim Township.

Officials said nine vehicles crashed, and numerous vehicles were stuck in the median. Authorities blamed snowy conditions moving suddenly through the county.

A tractor trailer jack-knifed, blocking both of the northbound lanes and causing multiple crashes. A woman sitting in the middle seat of a minivan—Beverly Grantier, 77, of Wellsville, New York—was killed in one of these crashes.

Gordon Grantier, 79, also of Wellsville, was critically injured.

The crashes led to I-81 being shut down in both directions. Southbound lanes opened within a few hours; northbound lanes remained closed until 3:30 p.m.
