Bedford Co., VA – Very dry air combined with strong, gusty winds has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for parts of the ABC 13 viewing area Sunday.

The Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Roanoke Valley into Bedford and Amherst Counties, and areas to the north, through 6 p.m.

Already, several crews are on the scene of a brush fire in Bedford County off of Silver Dollar Lane.

Huddleston Fire Chief Wayne Overstreet said the five-acre fire was called in around 6:30 a.m. Crews from Huddleston, Forest, and Bedford County have contained the blaze.

Overstreet said crews are now "mopping up" the fire, pushing back fire lines and hosing hot spots down due to the Red Flag conditions expected throughout the afternoon.

The fire will continue to smoke for the next couple of days, Overstreet said.

Winds Sunday will gust over 25 mph at times, with gusts over 40 mph possible near higher elevations.

Red Flag Warnings are issued when conditions become favorable for "explosive" wildfire growth. Any small spark or ignition could start a fire Sunday.

Since September 1, most of the area has become very dry compared to normal. Lynchburg is 6.31" below normal for moisture since September 1, along with Roanoke (-5.31"), Blacksburg (-3.31"), and Danville (-7.52") since September 1.
