Neighbors Have Questions About Car Fire, Police Investigating Suspicious Death

Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg police are investigating a suspicious death after crews pulled a badly burned body from a car on Fleetwood Drive.

Neighbors called 911 around 5 p.m. Sunday after seeing the car go up in flames.

The body was burned so badly, it wasn't clear whether it was male or female.

Police have been extremely tight-lipped about this investigation. They aren't saying whether they suspect foul play.

It isn't unusual for cars to head down Fleetwood Drive and turn around. But police are still trying to understand the circumstances that led to this dead end.

Neighbor Rob Lindsey heard two explosions.

"There was a loud bang," he said.

After neighbors heard the explosion, they came outside and found vehicle on fire at the end of this cul-de-sac. What they say is even more unusual-- the driver's side door was partially ajar."

"It was almost like you lightly pushed against the door, it didn't latch at all," said Shawn Sweigart.

Sweigart saw the driver and told police he was a skinny man with a beard in his mid forties.

"The way they were directing their questions, they continued to ask me how many people were in the car," he said.

"The police did?" we asked.

"Yeah," he responded.

Sweigart says something else that's strange was the way the car exploded.

"It was literally flames out the engine, which to me is still abnormal. Oil would catch the back and everything would explode."

"It was odd, it doesn't really happen around here. This is a fairly quiet neighborhood," said Lindsey.

Questions are still swirling around the crime tape.

"If it comes back that the driver was the one that was dead, okay maybe they tried to get out," said Sweigart.

Neighbors are wondering if there was something they could have done.

There was another car fire in Lynchburg Sunday--there was also one on Langhorne Road. Police aren't saying whether the two are connected.
