Traveling Advice as Weather Cools Down

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - If you plan to hit the road as this slick weather starts to hit our area, you need to make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle anything. That starts with a winter kit.

It sounds like common sense, but many people do not have one. One man in our area credits his kit for making a snow-in situation a little bit better.

"Right here I have a lot of things. Back up flashlight, first aid kit, a backup jacket," said David Broussard.

That is just a fraction of supplies Broussard has in his truck.

"I've got jumper cables, a spare tire," said Broussard.

He says he has always been prepared but ramped up his emergency kit after the big snowfall of 2009. You may remember, it was right before Christmas.

"The highways just shut down," said Broussard.

It was a mess.  He says semi trucks were getting stuck, people were abandoning their cars and many folks were not prepared.

"I saw people in the gas station with light coats on, shivering. They were wet from walking in the snow," said Broussard.

For 20 hours, Broussard and his dog Goldie were stuck in the thick of it as they traveled to Chicago but they had supplies.

It all comes down to planning.

ABC 13 wants to get you ready for winter driving. Experts say it is important to have a survival kit in your vehicle. Some things you will want to put inside: gloves, extra batteries, water, a first aid kit, a shovel, a flashlight, jumper cables, non-perishable food, kitty litter and tire chains are highly recommended.

Broussard had all the above and a few extras.

"A thermos full of coffee, I had a 6-pack of Coca Cola and a little cooler full of sandwiches," said Broussard.

The traffic is only going to get busier as we get closer to Thanksgiving. So remember to pack a winter kit. Also, if you happen to get stuck in lots of traffic, make sure to constantly fill up your gas tank.
