Fire company produces TV ad for shot at cash

A Dauphin County fire company is trying something a bit out of the ordinary in order to raise some money.

The Union Deposit Volunteer Fire Company is entering a contest that Doritos runs every year. They put together a TV ad for the company to run during the Super Bowl and win up to $1 million.

The effort was led by company firefighter Andy Dresher, who is also a photographer and produces films in his spare time.

"I called in a good director of photography," he said. "We had a grip crew and we worked on a bare bones budget to be honest with you. They did it on a volunteer service."

And what they came up with is pretty darn sharp.  They used the company members and Company 47 equipment.  A man is eating Doritos, calls 9-1-1, and the crew comes to put out the fire.

The company will select the finalists and it will then be up to a popular vote.

"What would we do with that money?" said Dresher. "We'd do a lot of retro-fitting around here for the fire house. It would go a long way."

Union Deposit Chief Kevin Gern says even if they don't win the contest, they've already come out on top with the publicity alone.

"People are starting to realize that South Hanover Township has a volunteer fire service and maybe this will draw some new members in, willing to participate and help volunteer some time," Gern said.

Plus it may prompt the residents to pitch in a few bucks to help Company 47 meet its expenses. And then there are the intangible benefits.

"This has been a huge morale booster around the station," Gern said. "It's really been one of those projects that you can work together on."

You can check out all of the entries on the Doritos website.
