Small Businesses on the Southside Prep for Holiday Shopping Season

Posted:

South Boston, VA - The windows are dressed and the doors are open on Main Street in South Boston.

The store owners are looking forward to seeing loyal customers and new faces coming in for the holiday rush.

"That's what small businesses are all about, " said local business owner John Lantor.

Lantor's boutique has been part of the community for more than a hundred years.

Lantor says he may not have the rock bottom sales you may find at the big box competitors, but he can offer what they can't.

"Here you're going to get one of a kind things, I have a seamstress on call, and we're going to give you the personal service that you can't get anywhere else, "he said.

Executive Director of Destination Downtown South Boston Tamyra Vest says it's all about that one-on-one interaction.

"You can connect with the shops here and the owners here, which you can't connect always at the big box, " said Vest, and by spending money locally, Vest says residents are providing income for their neighbors and investing back into the community.

"That means that that money is spent right back here and it's wonderful when that growth happens right here in our own front yard, " Vest said.

As the Southside tries to recover from job loss and economic hardship, the local support for downtown businesses like Lantor's goes a long way.

"We love Southside and we hope to be here another hundred years, " Lantor said.

"We depend on them to keep our communities live and viable, " said Vest.

The concept of Small Business Saturday was originally created by American Express, and the company is offering cash back for cardholders on purchases made at qualifying small businesses on Saturday.
