UPDATE: 2:21 p.m.

Lynchburg, VA - Snow fell across the Heart of Virginia Wednesday, even coating the ground in a few areas.

The majority of the snow will be tapering off from SW to NE as the system quickly heads to the north.

Most of the accumulating snow fell in the mountains around Roanoke County into the New River Valley.

A quick coating of snow fell east of the mountains, around the actual jet stream energy, as it passed over Danville and Gretna. The snow weakened a little over Lynchburg, but flakes were still flying Wednesday.

The other big issue now is the wind. Gusts will reach 40 mph in a few areas late Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Cold air is also moving back in as the snow moves out.

UPDATE: 12:27 a.m.

Lynchburg, VA - The heaviest band of snow is now quickly advancing east through Smith Mountain Lake, Bedford County, and is nearing the Lynchburg area.

Most of the snow will move through very quickly early this afternoon, followed by high winds.

A quick coating is possible in colder areas. The mountains along and west of Roanoke have picked up the most accumulation so far.

UPDATE: 11:32 a.m.

Roanoke, VA – A heavy band of snow is pushing through parts of the New River Valley and the Roanoke Valley and foothills.

The snow is falling as colder air is rushing in from the west up in the clouds, while upper level energy passes by into the early afternoon.

While most areas in the valleys and lower elevations will probably only see a dusting at best, a coating is possible in a few areas.

Accumulations will be limited to the higher elevations of the New River Valley and Alleghany Highlands into Wednesday afternoon, where 1-2" is possible before ending today.

The system is moving fast, so any snow that falls will only last an hour or two.

High winds are becoming an issue and will get stronger later in the day. Wind advisories are up for Nelson, Bedford, Franklin, and Patrick County for wind gusts that could top 40 mph Wednesday.

-----------

Today temperatures fall into the 20s and 30s. Rain showers continue to change to snow showers through early afternoon. The pavement will be too wet and mild for accumulation, but a coating to an inch is expected on grassy and elevated surfaces. Higher elevations along and west of the Blue Ridge will have closer to 2 inches.

Anticipate increasing winds from the northwest for all parts of the area. Sustained winds of 15-25mph are common, with some gusts to 40mph, especially in areas along and west of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Tonight we have clearing skies, gusty breezes and very cold conditions. Lows near 20. Thanksgiving Day is sunny and blustery. Highs only near 36. Black Friday and Saturday are mostly to partly sunny and chilly. Highs in the 40s. A few showers are possible late Sunday into Monday.
