Area Highways Crowding Up Before Thanksgiving

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - A lot of folks are braving the cold weather and heading home for the holidays.

AAA says Wednesday is the busiest single day of travel for Thanksgiving, with 37% of people hitting the roads.

In Lynchburg, Wednesday evening, the traffic really picked up.

According to AAA, more than 43 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend, down about 1.5% from this time last year.

AAA also says 90% of people who travel will drive.

People in the middle of their trips said they had very different experiences.

"Holiday travel can be very hectic at times, very stressful, but then again, it's family time so you just got to be careful and watch the people going all over the place," said Marvin Jones.

"I've drove from Purcellville up north to get to here. So that's about it. I'm not doing much more than that," said Will Arrington.

According to industry reports, gas prices are up for the second straight week, but the national average is down about 13 cents from this time last year.
