A local congregation is giving thanks for the Thanksgiving holiday as they do every year...by reaching out to those who work on the holiday to keep us safe.
Chef Mark Powers led a team of volunteers from Kesher Israel Congregation in Harrisburg preparing turkey dinners for local firefighters and police officers who have to work on Thanksgiving day.
It's an idea that started in 2001 after the congregation saw the efforts of firefighters in New York on 9/11.
"We have firefighters in our community as well, and we sort of take them for granted," said Rabbi Akiva Males of Kesher Israel. "And we expect them in an emergency; we place that phone call, and they're there."
Rabbi Males thanked his volunteers and also Giant on Linglestown Road for donating the turkeys that were being cooked and served.
