Volunteers Serve Meals from the Heart at Danville Salvation Army

Danville, VA - It was all hands on deck at the Danville Salvation Army as dozens of volunteers prepared to serve Thanksgiving meals for the masses.

"Since 8 o'clock this morning, we've been cooking, " said Captain Karl Dahline.

It took days of prep work to get to this point, but there was no shortage of volunteers or funding - thanks to a fundraising campaign by Robbie Woodall that brought in $3,000 toward the holiday meal.

"We literally couldn't have done it without him, so that was a great donation, " Dahline said.

For Kitchen Manager David Terrell, it's a familiar routine.

"I've been doing it so long, it wouldn't be Thanksgiving if I didn't get to do it, " Terrell said.

This is his 20th year volunteering, and he says he wouldn't have it any other way, but for some volunteers, it was a new - yet equally rewarding - opportunity.

Howard Thompson of "Moonshiners" fame came out to man the serving line. He says before being part of a hit TV show, he too experienced the generosity of the Salvation Army.

"This place has helped me out when I've had hard times. I've came here and got vouchers to get clothes and shoes. The good Lord has blessed me and brought me back to a higher pillar in life, and I'm thankful for that and I feel like I should be able to give back, " Thompson said.

For him, that's what makes this day so special.

"It's more less, getting into the community and celebrating as a family. Let's help bring people up and encourage people. That's what it's all about, " Thompson said.
