Roundtop opens for ski season

Posted: Updated:

While holiday shoppers packed the malls in search of bargains on Black Friday, skiers got an early jump on winter at Roundtop Mountain Resort.

After a week of making snow, Roundtop opened for the season on Friday, one month earlier than last year.

"We opened at 9 but there were people standing there at 7:30 because people want to get the first chair. It's sort of a special honor each year," Roundtop marketing director Chris Dudding said.

"This is the second time in 12 years that it's been open the Friday after Thanksgiving, so we are very excited," Maria Naylor said.

Roundtop credits their upgraded snow-making system which includes nine miles of pipe.

"We replaced a bunch of pipe under the mountain and there are new snow makers out there," Dudding said. "That's why we have eight slopes open this year, which is really unusual for the first day."

The early opening is also great news for Roundtop employees like instructor Dustin Simcoe, who can start teaching again.

"A lot of kids are really getting into the freestyle right now with the Olympics," Simcoe said. "I really think you will see the freestyle take off."

Since they got off to such an early start, Roundtop managers and staff are hoping for a long season.
