Pennsylvania State Police are warning residents about a new phone scam.
A Newport woman filed a report after receiving a call from a person claiming her brother was in an accident in Harrisburg. The caller reportedly demanded the woman wire $2,000 to them or they would harm her brother.
"She was definitely shook up by it," said Trooper Robert Hicks, Pennsylvania State Police. "In this case they had some personal information regarding her brother which led her to believe that this actually could be happening."
Police say the woman called another relative, and when she realized her brother was okay she did not wire any money and called police.
"There is a lot of personal information out there. That is generally where they are getting their information from," said Hicks.
Police say they have traced some of the calls to Puerto Rico.
If you receive one of these calls, contact police immediately.
