Kids 'Shop with Cops'

Posted: Updated:

The goal of the Police Athletic League is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the youth they serve. That was on display Thursday night at the Walmart in Swatara Township.

Police officers from Harrisburg, the State Capitol, Swatara Township and Susquehanna Township escorted 32 young folks around Walmart. It was the third annual "Shop with Cops" organized by the Harrisburg Police Athletic League.

"This is a great event to have the officers and kids on a one on one basis," said Harrisburg Police Department Captain Annette Oates who also spends a lot of her time with P-A-L activities. "They can go out and Christmas shop and have a good time."

It was not a shopping spree for the kids themselves. They had to buy gifts for their immediate family.

"I'm buying for my two sisters and my mom," said 11-year old Joseph Covington.

"To come out there with the kids and have a really good time is just a huge stress relief," said Captain Oates.
