For the Lazarus United Church of Christ just south of York County in Lineboro, Maryland, a helping hand came in the form of some hand bells.
Fire destroyed their church last week. Music Director Rita Becker figured there were too many other losses to even worry about continuing the choir over the near term.
But the folks at the Steltz Church of New Freedom, York County offered to lend them their bells. As a result, they were able to make their performance Monday night at the Lutheran Retirement Village in Hanover.
"And when all this came about I just felt like we needed some joy, so we just decided were going to come...and snow and all we made it, fog, whatever we are here," Becker said.
Residents of the retirement home took up a collection for the church.
"I had people knocking on my door that weren't able to come up...because we spread the word," said resident Rosalie Hobbs. "We got on the phone and knocked on doors and they gave me donations."
"These folks who suffered this loss are part of our family," said resident Hank Langknecht. "It was an automatic response. They're going to do something for us but we have to reach out also."
