Suspects in custody in Lower Allen police incident

Posted: Updated:

Two suspects have been taken into custody following a police incident where a gunshot was fired at a state trooper in Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County.

State police said the trooper had stopped a vehicle with an expired registration on Hartzdale Drive behind the Capital City Mall just after 4 p.m. and an occupant of the vehicle fired a rifle at the trooper.

A resulting pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed at a local business and both occupants fled on foot, police said.

One suspect was taken into custody on Cedar Hearst Lane after a short pursuit, and the second suspect was apprehended a short time later without incident, police said.

"Because of everybody's help and cooperation we were able to get these two suspects arrested and get them off the street," Trooper Rob Hicks said.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of the suspects, who were transported to the Cumberland County Prison.

No police officers were injured. However, one suspect was injured and needed medical treatment after being bit by a police dog.

Township officials during the search for the second suspect had used automated telephone calls to urge residents in the area of Rossmoyne Manor to stay indoors and lock all doors and windows until further notice.

Many in the neighborhood heeded the warning.

"I got the dog in, I locked the front door," Carol Konyk said.
