Job Outlook Good for Southside December Graduates

Danville, VA - A recent Bloomberg report says the jobs outlook is the best it's been in five years.

The US Labor Department says the number of positions waiting be filled increased by 42,000.

The numbers are great news for soon to be graduates in our area.

Josefine Blick will be one of more than 300 students walking across the stage at Averett University this weekend.

"I'm very, very excited," Blick said.

Blick wants to find a job as a legal secretary while applying for law school.

"I want to become an international lawyer working with human rights," Blick said.

She doesn't have much time. Blick is an international student who must return home to Sweden if she doesn't find work in two months.

Like many of her peers, Blick says she's nervous, but optimistic.

"You just have to ignore that fear and just go for it," Blick said.

Studies show that there are more opportunities now than there have been in recent years for students like Blick.

Averett's Career Services Director Petrina Carter says that's evident in Danville with new companies that have come to the area.

"The companies that the city of Danville is bringing in are looking for young vibrant minds to join them," Carter said.

Carter says there are benefits to graduating in the winter. By not having to compete with hundreds of summer graduates across the state, Carter says they will stand-out to employers.

"They're looking at their hiring needs come January after the Christmas rush. So, to be in the job market prior to April or May is definitely an advantage," Carter said.

Carter says she's seen quite a few seniors who already have jobs lined up, but for those who don't, she offers this advice.

"Be confident in yourself and your skills. One 'No' is always that much closer to a 'Yes,'" Carter said.

The Bloomberg report also said more than 2 million people quit their jobs in October, the highest that number has been since 2008.
