Pa. lawmakers to consider smaller legislature

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

State lawmakers are scheduled to vote next week on a pair of bills to cut the size of the Pennsylvania legislature.

House Bill 1235 would reduce the size of the state House of Representatives from 203 members to 153.

A companion measure, House Bill 1716, would reduce the size of the Pennsylvania Senate from 50 to 38 members.

Both proposals are expected to come up for votes in the House on Monday.

Changing the size of the legislature would require an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution, so the bills must be debated and passed in two consecutive sessions of the General Assembly and then approved by referendum vote.

If approved, the new districts would be created as part of the 2021 redistricting process following the 2020 federal census.

The House approved similar legislation in the last session, but it was not considered by the Senate.
