Messy Weather Postponing Events On Saturday

Posted:

Danville, VA - The weather is again causing event changes. Last weekend, Lynchburg's Christmas parade had to be canceled. This weekend, the Southside is dealing with lots of changes.

Everyone hoped and planned for the sun to be shining. But Saturday's forecast doesn't look so promising. In fact, our entire area could see snow or rain. Danville looks to be wet.

"We're disappointed about the weather and hated to have to do it but just the freezing weather was just too much to handle," said Ken Larking, Deputy City Manager.

Some event planners decided not to mess with the messy weather like the ribbon cutting for the completion of the first phase of the River District. They moved that to Friday the 20th at 9:30 a.m.

Larking says they easily could email folks about the change but the challenge lies in re-arranging speakers' schedules and hoping that the crowds show up.

"We think it looks great, we're excited about it. We hope we have a lot of people at the event," said Larking.

At the Martinsville Speedway, their annual Toy Drive has never missed a beat. But this year, the weather moved their Saturday schedule to Sunday starting at 1.

"It's something that everybody around here looks forward to. It's something everyone around here puts a lot of effort into because we want to make kids happy on Christmas morning," said Clay Campbell, President of Martinsville Speedway.

For some events, the show will go on! The lighting of Danville's Christmas tree downtown remains set for 4:00 p.m. The Holiday Walking Tour in Danville will go on rain or shine Saturday and Sunday. But the Christmas parade took a minor detour. They plan to start an hour later at 7:00 p.m.

"You've got to be a little bit flexible, especially if you are scheduling something outdoors," said Larking.

Averett University's Commencement is also set for Saturday. It is indoors, so they don't foresee any changes.

If you are planning on braving the weather to watch Danville's parade, you should know they have a different route this year. Here are some tips from the event organizers:
* This year's grand marshal is Dr. Sue Davis, former Danville Public Schools Superintendent.
* The theme for the parade is Christmas Movies.
* The parade is sponsored by URW Federal Credit Union.
* The parade will begin at Broad and Main Street and end at the intersection of Craghead and Wilson.
* While ample viewing areas are available throughout the route, there will be two performance areas. Marching units and bands will be allowed a maximum of three minutes to perform in each area.
* The first performance area is in front of First Presbyterian Church on Main Street. The judges will be situated at this location.
* The second performance area is in front of Golden Leaf Bistro on Craghead Street. Star News will be filming the parade at this location.
* Parking is available at Newton's Landing off of Bridge Street.
* Portions of Bridge, Calqhoun and Craghead will be closed during the parade. Non-parade vehicles will not be able to cross, travel or approach the parade route.
