Tuscaloosa schools awaiting new textbooks

TUSCALOOSA - AL -

All that some Tuscaloosa schools want for Christmas are new textbooks.

According to school officials, some students are awaiting new textbooks before winter break.

Assistant Superintendent, Elizabeth Davis says the district's textbook committee was unable to find math books that matched new college career readiness standards for middle and high school students.

Students have been using old math books for part of the year.

The committee found new textbooks in September, however the publisher faced a shipping backlog because other school systems ordered the same materials.

Secondary education math specialist, Ken Webb, says the district is still waiting for about five percent of math textbooks to arrive and some are still in draft form because they're fresh off the printing press. He says the district is hoping to have all the textbooks by January 1, 2014.
