The Jefferson County jail reopens

Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSON COUNTY - AL -

Monday afternoon the Jefferson County Jail will once again house inmates on a regular basis. The Bessemer jail was closed in October 2009, after severe budget cuts hit the Sheriff's Office.

After a 30% reduction in the overall operating budget, the county jail was consolidated with the Birmingham facility. Two hundred inmates were moved from the Bessemer Jail to the JeffersonCounty Jail in Birmingham.

Since the closure, the facility in Bessemer has been used as a temporary holding area for inmates who must attend court in the Bessemer Criminal Justice Center.

The Sheriff's Office began the process of re-opening the jail in Bessemer on October 1, 2013 after receiving funding from the Jefferson County Commission.

On Monday December 16, the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer will resume normal operations.
